Forest bathing QUESTIONS

What is Forest bathing nature connection walk?

“Shinrin-Yoku” or forest bathing is the practice of spending time in the forest for better health, happiness, and a sense of calm. It literally means to bathe in the atmosphere of the forest, immersing your senses in your surroundings. No swimsuits or water required! Also, it is not a hike, and there is no goal. Just discovery, curiosity, awareness, openness, awe and joy!

A preventative medicine since the 1980s, the Japanese Forest Agency suggested the practice as a way to reconnect with nature and calm stressed-out city dwellers. It’s a slow sensory walk through the forest using mindfulness, meditation, breathing, and walking exercises.

Your guide will invite you to participate in various activities and exercises all designed to awaken your natural senses and slow down your mind, to bring your awareness to the here and now deep within nature.

What can I expect on this nature connection walk?

Unlike a hike or a naturalist walk, we’ll give our bodies and brains a break by simply using our senses to experience nature.

About the practice: After introductions, you’ll learn more about the origins of nature connection and its physical and mental health benefits

Experience nature using our senses: I’ll offer a variety of invitations for you to slow down, tap into your senses such as noticing what you can see, smell, hear, touch

walking barefoot, taking some time to make some forest art and experience the beautiful natural environment around us. Everything is optional. If you don’t feel comfortable or something doesn’t resonate for you that day, you can always sit by a tree and take some time just for yourself.

Invitations can vary on the day, the group, the location, the weather and the guide. So, no two sessions are ever the same. This is the joy of nature and our time with it.

Moments of sharing and listening: We’ll have moments where we’ll come together and are invited (but never required) to share what we’re noticing.

Tea and a snack: We’ll close with tea and a light snack, as well as have the opportunity to chat as a community.

Welcoming space: I’m a firm believer that everyone belongs in nature; I create a welcoming space for people from all walks of life.

Why should I try it?

In forest bathing, there are no obligations or predefined rules, so the choice is entirely yours. However, I believe it offers a highly approachable method of practicing mindfulness, allowing you to establish a connection with nature and with yourself. It is a practice that can be embraced by anyone, regardless of their belief system or previous experiences. There are no specific expectations regarding your emotions or any goals to accomplish during a session. It is purely a dedicated time for you to immerse yourself in nature. Moreover, you have the freedom to adopt and apply any of the concepts and exercises during your future encounters with nature.

Is forest bathing suitable for everyone, or are there certain individuals who should avoid it?

While forest bathing is open to anyone interested, it’s important to acknowledge that nature can evoke feelings of unease or fear in some people. Depending on your personal experiences, emotions, traumas, and triggers, spending time in nature can either offer a soothing respite from life’s challenges or potentially trigger uncomfortable memories or emotions associated with forests or green spaces.

Therefore, it is crucial to recognize and respect your own comfort levels and boundaries when engaging in forest bathing. There is no universally prescribed approach for everyone. Each of us is unique and what works for one person may not work for another. It’s perfectly acceptable to find your own safe and suitable choices when it comes to forest bathing.

Are children able to participate in forest bathing?

Definitely! In fact, most children are naturally inclined to engage in forest bathing, as they readily immerse themselves in the present moment and enthusiastically embrace nature. You can search for guides or facilitators who offer dedicated forest bathing sessions for children. Additionally, you might want to explore the concept of forest schools, as they often incorporate forest bathing as part of their activities and curriculum.

Technical QUESTIONS

What should I wear during forest bathing? Do I need to bring any snacks?

It’s advisable to avoid wearing your most formal attire, as forest bathing often involves activities like lying on the ground or getting close to nature. Dress in comfortable clothing suitable for camping or hiking in the woods, taking into consideration the weather conditions. Carrying a day-pack can be useful to have an extra layer for cooler days or a lighter shirt for summer, as well as essentials like sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, a water bottle, and a hat. Bringing a snack is a good idea in case the outing doesn’t include a designated picnic, but keep in mind that you may not spend enough time in one spot for a full lunch. As for footwear, a pair of running shoes or lightweight hiking boots would be ideal.

What is the usual duration of a forest bathing session?

Typically, a forest bathing session lasts around 2 to 3 hours, which might initially seem like a significant amount of time before you experience it firsthand. However, many participants report that they don’t actually perceive the passage of time during the session. They don’t feel rushed, yet they are surprised when the session concludes and realize that hours have effortlessly gone by. When we are fully present in nature, time tends to flow in a different manner.

Are there any concerns regarding hazards during forest bathing sessions?

Certified guides, like myself, undergo specific training and possess ample experience in the forest. We are well-versed in identifying and addressing local hazards. As part of our training, we are equipped with Wilderness First Aid skills and have an emergency response plan in place. However, the likelihood of encountering any hazards during a forest walk is minimal. Our sessions take place in areas close to towns or resorts, and we avoid engaging in any activities that could be considered dangerous. The trails and sites are carefully designed to avoid features such as cliffs, swiftly flowing creeks, or avalanche paths. You can join us with peace of mind, relax, and fully enjoy the marvels of nature.

What if I need to leave before the session ends?

If you anticipate needing to leave the session early, we kindly request that you inform your Forest Therapy Guide (FTG) beforehand.

Am I allowed to bring my phone? What about social media usage?

To enable the nature connection and a respectful environment for all participants, we ask that you turn off your phone for the entire duration of the session. Once the walk begins, we have a policy that prohibits posting to social media. We have established this policy to safeguard the privacy of our participants as well as well as reaching the most possible serene outcome.  Our aim is to create a secure space during our programs where participants can embark on their personal journeys without any judgment.
